The actress whose father, Jerome Jesse Berry, was an African-American that worked as a hospital attendant, and her mother, Judith Ann (Hawkins), a Caucasian with English and German ancestry, was a retired psychiatric nurse, started her modeling career in 1986 when she came second in the Miss USA Beauty Pageant and later came first in the Miss USA World Beauty Pageant.

In addition she was ordered to pay $115,000 retroactively in child support by the court.
