American rapper turned actor and film actor, Willard Christopher Smith Jr, famously known simply as Will Smith who was born on the 25th of September 1968, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, transitioned from being a successful rapper to Hollywood A-list actor.
Will Smith who started his highly successful rap music career as DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince at age of 16 after he met Jeff Townes, starred on the popular sitcom ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ for six seasons, before later gaining grounds as a Hollywood A-lister with the movie titled Bad Boys released 1995 and Independence Day released in 1996, before he later appeared in popular blockbuster movies like Men in Black released in 1997 and Hitch released in 2005, while progressing to earn an Oscar nominations for Ali released in 200) and The Pursuit of Happyness released in 2006.
The famed actor who is the son of Caroline, a school board employee and Willard C. The rapper who started rapping at the age of 12, by following the path of his idol, Grandmaster Flash but garnished his own rhymes with a touch of comedy that later became his trademark, met a DJ named Jeff Townes at a party when he was 16 years old, they later became friends, and launched Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, they started producing music that excluded the gangsta rap sound that was emerging from the West Coast, while rapping on teenage preoccupations in a clean, curse-free style that middle America found very safe and entertaining. They released their first single, titled “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble,” that was a hit in 1986. After which they released their debut album, titled Rock the House in 1987.
Smith became a millionaire at the age of 18 after their album Rock the House, hit the Billboard Top 200, this early success din’t allow him consider the thought of attending college. It was even reported that he rejected a scholarship to Boston’s elite Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince continued their success with the album He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper.featuring the radio-friendly singles “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” “Brand New Funk,” and “Nightmare on My Street,”in 1998, the album later won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance.
Smith who started his notable switch into acting two years later, was signed by NBC to headline a sitcom on a street-smart kid from Philadelphia that moves in with stuffy relatives in the posh Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel-Air, playing on his rapper persona, and at times featuring his friend Towne, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was a huge success that ran for six seasons. While the pair continued producing music, and produced the album titled ‘Homebase’ with the hits “Summertime” and “Ring My Bell” in 1991. While their final album together, 1993’s Code Red, was remarkable for “Boom! Shake the Room.”
Smith started a second crossover into movies, while still making The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, with small roles in the drama titled ‘Where The Day Takes You’ released in 1992 and the comedy ‘Made In America’ in 1993 that was followed by a critically acclaimed lead in Six Degrees of Separation in 1993. In 1995, his first move into superstardom came with his next film, titled Bad Boys, an high-budget cop movie in which he teamed up with comic actor, Martin Lawrence, breaking away from the black-cop-white-cop formula that had been so successful for Beverly Hills Cop and the Lethal Weapon series. In 1996, he starred in the epic sci-fi flick Independence Day released in 1996, his role in the movie made him a major player in Hollywood and the go-to guy for summer blockbusters.
In 1997, he appeared in the comic sci-fi action movie titled, Men In Black alongside, Tommy Lee Jones. He rapped the theme song, and its inclusion on his 1997 solo album, Big Willie Style, that brought him more success. He later followed it up with another blockbuster titled Enemy of the State released in 1998, that earned him NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. His string of hits came to an end in 1999 with Wild Wild West, a sci-fi cowboy Western co-starring Kevin Kline.
The 2001 biopic Ali, based on great boxing legend Muhammad Ali, gave Smith the chance to regain his big-screen credit while also earning him first Academy Award nomination. In 2002, he appeared in Men In Black II and Bad Boys II in 2003. In 2004, Smith starred in I, Robot, the Isaac Asimov adaptation movie that featured Smith as a futuristic cop investigating a murder by a robot and then battling a robot insurgency. The movie grossed more than $144 million domestically.
Will Smith who has been married twice, first got married to Sheree Zampino in 1992, the marriage lasted for three years and produced a son, named Willard Smith III born in 1992. In 1997 he got married to actress Jada Pinkett Smith with whom he welcomed their son, Jaden in 1998, and daughter, Willow, in 2000.
